Marc Wilson has been a photographer for over 15 years working both on long term projects and commercially. A book of his latest project, documents the wartime costal defences of North-West Europe and the memories and histories they contain. Wilson’s projects document human interaction in the landscape, through subjects of memory, history and society. His work has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, both in the UK and internationally in Athens, Milan, Grenoble & New York.
Over four years, Marc Wilson traveled to 143 locations to capture these images, along the coastlines of the UK, The Channel Islands, Northern & Western France, Denmark, Belgium and Norway.
“It’s large format work and it’s quite beautiful. Everything is shot in subdued diffused light, it looks like it’s pre-dawn much of the time, and the way in which the different defences merge and crumble into the landscape of which they are now part is quite the sight to behold. The Last Stand is as multi-layered as the landscapes which it features; there’s historical detail wrapped folded over into a chronotopia of functional brutalism, mixed with local touches that feeds into the geological, panoramic and tactical.” – Colin Pantell, Photographer
